Datuk Seri Mukhriz Mahathir has found himself in a political danger zone, as he may no longer be Kedah Umno’s top gun if the protest by state party leaders against him is anything to go by.
The denouncement of Mukhriz’s leadership by Umno division heads had caught many by surprise, but it was not totally unexpected. To some, it may be difficult to see where the soft-spoken Kedah menteri besar went wrong, but those in the know are keenly aware of his shortcomings.
Commentators or observers who look at issues on the surface are likely to assume that the criticisms against Mukhriz came largely due to his father, Tun Dr Mahathir Mohamad’s, relationship with Prime Minister Datuk Seri Najib Razak.
However, that is not the case, according to Kedah Umno grassroots, particularly among the veterans.
They say Mukhriz has been, for quite sometime, severely lacking in leadership. He has left the party divisions rudderless and the state administration at odds with the people’s interest.
Among others, they question his tendency to hold state liaison meetings in Kuala Lumpur, instead of Kedah.
“We Kedahans understand the problem better. At times, the state liaison committee did not even meet for months, but some will take place in Kuala Lumpur. “In November, only three division heads sat with Mukhriz for the meeting there. It shows that they are distancing themselves from him.
“He doesn’t bother to touch base with the divisions or branches. He is the state Umno chairman. “For example, how can the divisions implement programmes without his approval? “The man is always away.
You can’t lead if you are always absent,” said Sungai Petani Umno division permanent chairman Makbul Illahi.
Worse still, Mukhriz only spends four days a week running the Rice Bowl state. He flies back to his family in Kuala Lumpur every Thursday and will return here to Alor Star on Sundays.
Such a schedule has affected his daily affairs with the people and working relationship with the Kedah Civil Service (KCS) administrative officers.
At times, several Umno leaders were forced to take matters into their own hands — they sent scathing text messages to Mukhriz to demand his presence in the state. “Mukhriz is not exactly people-friendly, despite the popularity he enjoys.
“Yes, he does smile and pose for pictures with the people, but due to his busy schedule, he is now known as the ‘absent MB’. Out of 10 events, nine are attended by his representatives.
“The KCS officers have been complaining as well. It is just not easy to meet him. “You just do not know when you will be able to sit down with the menteri besar to discuss issues affecting them KCS.
“Sometimes, you just have to maki (berate) him and only then will he be here (in the state),” said a senior Kedah Umno leader. Correspondingly, state Umno leaders have not endorsed some of his statements that run counter-intuitively with the state government’s charter to improve the people’s financial well being.
“For instance, Mukhriz did ask for the Federal Government to reduce the Goods and Services Tax (GST) from six per cent to three per cent. “Baguih la... (that is good), but why on earth would he, instead then, increase the quit rent by more than 40 per cent? “He was talking about easing the people’s financial burden, but in an about-turn, he hiked the tax rate in other sections. “That is simply mind-boggling,” said another state party leader.
Nevertheless, there was nothing personal about the criticism. The disgruntled Umno leaders were only expressing disappointment over Mukhriz’s disposition and work ethics.
“Do you think (Kedah Umno deputy chairman) Datuk Ahmad Bashah (Md Hanipah) was happy when he had to hold a press conference yesterday? He was not. “But things are getting out of hand.
Kedah politics has always been cultured and civilised. “Mukhriz ni budak pandai dan baik (Mukhriz is a good and intelligent man). That is a fact. He can do better at the national level. “But he does not have what it takes to be a menteri besar.
That is a different ball game for him.” Today at noon, three menteris besar from Perak, Perlis, Kedah and the Penang chief minister are scheduled to meet with Najib in Putrajaya, to discuss the Northern Corridor development. It is uncertain however, if Mukhriz will be there to face his boss going by the din in his state.
Maybe for now, the domestic jetsetter will spend more time addressing issues back home
